Osama bin Laden dead: Reactions From South Carolina

Sunday, May 1, 2011, President Barack Obama announced that one of the world's most wanted terrorists, Osama bin Laden was confirmed dead. Reactions around the Midlands ranged from the light-hearted to the more serious.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley posted on her facebook page that "Justice has been served" .

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin said that "while we realize the fight against terrorism is far from over, we hope that this news might bring some small measure of peace to all those who still mourn".

House Assistant Democratic Leader, Representative Jim Clyburn said that "this is a great day for America and a tremendous victory in the global war on terror".

Fort Jackson, South Carolina is the largest and most active Initial Entry Training Center in the United States Army, providing training to almost 50% of the men and women who enter the service each year. Fort Jackson spokesman Patrick Jones said "the post raised its Force Protection level to BRAVO on Sunday, the second of five levels. Jones said commuters should allow extra time for entrance into the facility, especially during the morning hours" .

South Carolinians chimed in with a variety of interesting reactions on Wistv 10's Facebook page.

The fallout from Osama bin Laden's death will be felt for a long time to come. Perhaps one of the most unusual reactions that caused passers-by to do a double take and highlighted the feelings of many South Carolinians was a sign outside of one of the local bars in Columbia offering free drinks to commemorate the occassion.
